How long have you been building homes?

Lyle Duell founded Father and Son Builders in 1983 in Lebanon, Maine and incorporated it in 1984. Since then we have proudly built over 500 homes in Southern Maine and New Hampshire.

What types of homes do you build?

We build in two distinct categories: entry-level homes and custom-built homes. Both go through the same process and are built to our high quality standard. We love to build homes, so whether you are building your first home or are finally ready to build your vacation home here in Maine, we can design and construct a home that is perfect for your family and lifestyle.
From start to finish, how long does it take to build a home?

Our entry-level homes take between 3 to 4 months to build, and our custom-built homes, such as the ones you’ll find at Tidewater Landing, can take 6 or more months. Customized homes needed longer lead-times because an architect is involved in the design process, and the products customers typically select take longer for delivery. But no matter the style of home you ask us to build, we will give you our personalized attention to ensure that you know what’s happening throughout your new home construction experience.

What is green building?

Green building is much more than the products and materials you place into a home; it is a holistic look at the house before the first nail is hammered or the first Energy Star® appliance is selected.

For our customers, it begins with design – from energy efficient integrations to the types of building materials that are used to build your home. Green building also encompasses the positioning of the house on the lot and includes water, resources and indoor air quality.

Having said that, we also recognize that each customer has different needs; therefore, we take great care to determine your priorities. What makes sense for a family who lives in their home year-round may be completely different than for a family who is building a summer lake house. Together, we’ll discuss the green building options available to decide what makes sense for your home, lifestyle and needs.

Best building practices are important to me. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest products and building technologies?

The best building practices are important to us, too. We are constantly researching and reading about new products and building practices so we can help you make informed decisions about the choices you make for your home. We are one of two builders in Maine to hold both the Certified Green Professional (CGP) and Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) designations. We attend continuing education classes on a regular basis – often in conjunction with our volunteer participation in the National Association of Home Builders Board of Directors’ meetings.
